Dorie Miller was one of the first heroes of World War II and a symbol for African-Americans. Miller was a cook on the battleship West Virginia who manned a machine gun and later helped save numerous shipmates during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Miller’s heroics were widely reported, he won the Navy Cross and went on a nationwide bond drive to help raise funds for the war. He died on Nov, 20, 1943, when a Japanese submarine sunk his ship, the Liscome Bay. This 1 1/4 inch celluloid pictures Miller and is in excellent condition.
