William Howard Taft looks for a little bit of good luck with this wishbone celluloid pin. The idea of a wishbone being good luck goes all the way back to the Etruscans, who were always looking around at chicken bones and similar items to tell the future. The Romans came along and added the tradition of breaking the wishbone for good luck. This 2 1/8 inch celluloid turned out to be a lucky omen for Taft in 1908, when he was elected president. It has a Whitehead and Hoag back paper and is in excellent condition. From Bob Atwater’s collection.
