A rare pin made after one of the most famous luncheons in White House history. Theodore Roosevelt invited Booker T. Washington to lunch on Oct. 16, 1901. The table barely was cleared when Southern newspapers expressed outrage at the idea of a president inviting a black man to dine with him. The incident has enjoyed renewed attention with Barack Obama’s election as president – now there’s a black man who eats lunch at the White House every day. This rare 1 1/2 inch “Equality” celluloid is one of the classic pins made to celebrate that famous luncheon. As you can see, it is a bit dark but is a classic pin and a great buy at this price.
