Solar eclipses captured the public’s imagination at the turn of the 20th century. There were eclipses in 1896 and 1900 and they were accompanied by all kinds of scientific expeditions that traveled to study the phenomenon and then report their findings to the public. The fascination with eclipses shows up on this rare McKinley campaign pin, showing the Republican candidate eclipsing William Jennings Bryan. It’s a 1 1/4 inch celluloid in excellent condition.
