William McKinley was from Canton, Ohio, which rang a bell with the good people of Canton, South Dakota. They decided that anyone from Canton, even if it was Ohio, was good enough for them. This Canton Club McKinley-Hobart pin from 1896 is a rare McKinley jugate – the city was incorporated in 1881 and there are only 3,000 people living there today, so there weren’t many folks around to wear campaign buttons back in 1896. This 1 1/4 inch celluloid has a Whitehead and Hoag back paper and is in excellent condition.
