his 1940 Wendell Willkie campaign pin has double significance. It features a sports hero, heavyweight champ Joe Louis, endorsing a political candidate. Even more unusual for the time, it’s an African-American sports hero doing the endorsing. Louis broke new ground in 1940 and this 1 1/4 inch celluloid is a scarce item from that campaign. St. Louis Button Company back paper, excellent condition.
