Doris “Dorie” Miller was a cook on the USS West Virginia who became the most famous hero of Pearl Harbor. Miller manned an anti-aircraft gun and helped move wounded men, including the captain of the ship. He was the first black sailor to be awarded the Navy Cross. This celluloid pin honored Miller as “The Hero of Pearl Harbor.” Miller made a war bond tour across the U.S. and later died in action aboard the escort carrier Liscome Bay in 1943.
