Well, no, it's not Ma Ferguson. We identified this pin as legendary Texas Gov. Ma Ferguson in the auction catalog, but according to locals experts David Quintin and Skip Morgan, we got it wrong. This 7/8-inch celluloid pictures Bina West Miller, leader of the U.S. Ladies of the Maccabees. Miller was a leading suffrage advocate who gave suffrage lectures across the country and around the world. She also gave one of the nominating speeches for Herbert Hoover at the 1928 convention and the Associated Press called her "one of the five greatest women in America." She founded The Women's Benefit Association, a fraternal group that offered life insurance for women starting in the 1890s. The company she founded still exists today as the Woman's Life Insurance Society, located in Port Huron, Michigan.
Bina West Miller, Suffragette and Business Woman
