President Franklin Roosevelt visited Barnesville, Ga., on Aug. 11, 1938. A reported 50,000 people gathered at Gordon Military College to hear FDR dedicate a Rural Electrification Administration project and campaign against Walter George, a U.S. senator who opposed some of FDR’s policies. The crowd loved the project but didn’t like FDR sticking his nose into Georgia politics, and George was easily re-elected. This rare 1 1/4 inch celluloid is from the Fred Strickland collection and is a one-day event pin in excellent condition.
